with Dr Sophie Lea
Presented by Dr Sophie Lea, a dedicated researcher and consultant in healthcare design for therapeutic environments, this session shines a spotlight on the often-overlooked role of physical space in therapeutic practice. With healthcare design research traditionally focused on hospital settings, Dr Lea’s work bridges the gap by bringing evidence-based insights directly to the therapy field — highlighting the profound impact that the therapy room environment can have on both clients and clinicians.
Drawing on a qualitative research study using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) and semi-structured interviews with twenty adult clients and therapists, Dr Lea shares compelling findings about the lived experience of therapy spaces. Her ongoing consultancy work further deepens the relevance of this research, particularly in the context of trauma-informed design.
This session offers practical and accessible guidance for enhancing therapy environments, covering both in-person and telehealth settings. Dr Lea introduces delegates to key trauma-informed design principles, shares specific, achievable recommendations, and encourages reflection on the suitability of attendees' current workspaces.
Whether you're in private practice, a community organisation, or transitioning between online and face-to-face services, this presentation equips you with the knowledge and tools to advocate for and implement meaningful design changes. Attendees will leave with a stronger understanding of how space shapes therapeutic outcomes — and how to intentionally craft environments that support healing, safety, and connection.
