With Precious Sharizz Bautista

Presented by Precious Sharizz Bautista, a psychology student from Saint Louis University, Philippines, this compelling research presentation explores the lived experiences of Filipino families caring for relatives diagnosed with schizophrenia. Drawing on a phenomenological study conducted with families in rural communities, Precious provides valuable insight into the emotional, social, and practical realities faced by family caregivers who often serve as the primary source of support for their loved ones.
Through in-depth interviews with family members, the study examines the complex challenges associated with caregiving, including confusion surrounding the disorder, emotional burden, role reversals within the family, and the inadequacy of available support systems. Participants described feelings of fear, exhaustion, frustration, grief, and loss, while also highlighting the significant impact that schizophrenia can have on family relationships, wellbeing, and daily life.
The presentation also explores the barriers families encounter when seeking assistance, including stigma, discrimination, limited access to mental health services, financial constraints, and difficulties navigating healthcare systems. Particular attention is given to the experiences of families living in underserved rural areas, where resources and professional support may be limited.
Despite these challenges, the research highlights the resilience of Filipino families and the strategies they use to manage the demands of caregiving. Themes of spirituality, meaning-making, acceptance, patience, and unwavering commitment emerged as important sources of strength. Families described finding purpose in their experiences, focusing on the positive qualities of their loved ones, and maintaining hope in the face of ongoing uncertainty.
The discussion emphasises the importance of psychoeducation, culturally responsive communication, and greater empathy from mental health practitioners and service providers. It also underscores the need for stronger community support, improved access to treatment and medication, and recognition of the wellbeing needs of caregivers themselves. This presentation offers mental health professionals, researchers, and helping practitioners a deeper understanding of family caregiving in the context of schizophrenia and provides important insights for developing more compassionate, family-centred approaches to mental health care.
